Disney Mobile Games and Imangi Studios launched a new Oz-inspired version of Temple Run Tuesday: Temple Run Oz. Built using Imangi’s Temple Run 2 platform, the game takes players on a magical journey down the yellow brick road, with a number of new and exciting features you might only find in Oz.
It's the second partnership between the two companies, which came together last year to create another Disney-inspired version of the game: Temple Run Brave.
“We had a really great experience working with Disney and their team on Temple Run Brave,” Imangi co-founder Keith Shepard told Mashable. “So, as we started working on Temple Run 2 we had some discussions about doing it again.”
Temple Run Brave was built on top of Temple Run’s original game, while Temple Run Oz is built over the recently-released second version of the game.
“The timing here for Temple Run Oz is awesome,” says Bart Decrem GM of Disney Mobile Games. “A couple weeks after Temple Run 2 here comes a game that speaks to awesome childhood moments – the yellow brick road and the world of Oz.”
Great and Powerful Oz
In the game you play the role of the Great and Powerful Oz. Similar to the other Temple Run games, you’re a continuous runner, meaning that your only move is to run, and try to not die, in this case down the Yellow Brick Road.
Graphics in the game are mesmerizing, and include flying monkeys, exotic plants, and an awe-inspiring world that are sure to make you realize you aren’t in Kansas anymore.
Small details such as a flying monkey power up to carry you when you might have just ran faster in other versions of the game, and a soap bubble to protect you when you return from a near-death mishap, make the world all the more believable.
Up, Up and Away
Throughout the game you encounter several scattered hot air balloons. The balloons appear on the screen, and head quickly in one direction at a crossroads. Follow the balloon and hop on to take a balloon trip through the clouds.
Not interested in a high-flying adventure? Head the opposite way and keep both your feet on the ground.
Enchanted Walkway
In addition to hot air balloons there are several other obstacles that appear in the game as you play. Unlike other versions of Temple Run where you can see the obstacles before you reach them, in Oz many of those obstacles appear before your eyes as you approach them.
Plants in the game often leap from locations on the side of the path, attempting to grab you as they fall. Trees also often fall, seemingly out of nowhere, into the path to block your way.
It’s not just obstacles you have to watch out for. The path itself will sometimes crumble while you’re on bridges, forcing you to make a split-second decision to move to the side of the bridge that remains intact.
Through the Tornado
Unlike other versions of Temple Run, Temple Run Oz has several different worlds you can play in. As you run, street signs point you in the direction of a new area, follow the signs and stay alive in order to get there.
Transitions between worlds are done through a tornado, where the yellow brick road is collapsing in front of your eyes. Given the nature of the storm, your screen actually fades to white several times during the transition, forcing you to stay on your toes, even when you can’t actually see where you’re running.
Music Box Bonus
Temple Run 2 Oz Download
A small wooden music box plays a key role in the film Oz: The Great and Powerful. We won’t spoil that plot-point for you here except to say that a music box is also the feature point for the bonus round in Temple Run Oz.
Throughout the game you can collect music box keys. At the end of the game you are presented with a screen full of music boxes, and are allowed to select a box to unlock, one for each key you collected. Boxes include points and more to help you boost your final score.
